Yes, There’s Salmon in Alaska!

Places and Faces

Will Lascelles in skiff - photo by ReloMary

There is no salmon fishing in California this year BUT lucky for our sons, Will and Scott, there is salmon fishing in Alaska.  They were very fortunate to get a job aboard the Coventina which works out of Valdez/Seward, Alaska.

Many of you have been wondering about our trip there this month so I’ll attempt to fill you in a little bit more as we go.   August of 2008 will go down in Lascelles’ family history as one of the best times together ever!

The photo above was taken of Will (I refer to him as Film Man Will) aboard the skiff in - how appropriate is this - Prince William Sound.  It’s his job to take the net out and hold it steady with the skiff while the skipper, in turn, works the Conventina around to meet him to be able to close the net.  Everyone on board is studying the fish below.

Look at that backdrop.  This is where they have been for several days right along with a few other fishing boats.  The boys are aboard Zach’s boat, the Coventina, which is the biggest boat allowed for commercial salmon fishing.  It’s 58′.  If a boat is larger than this, it cannot be used commercially.

There is the skipper, Zach, from Anchorage along with Jake from upstate New York state and our 2 sons.  This is Will’s 2nd Read the rest of this entry »

Roof Comes off Downtown Redding!

Redding Hot Topics

Need 2 Speed - Photo by ReloMary

I’ve been out of town and came back and I heard the roof had come off of downtown!  I had to check this out!

When we arrived in Redding, CA back in 1982, the downtown mall was a group of buildings that had been covered.  Like so many other towns, the downtown was dying.  The powers that be thought it a great idea to block some streets and cover the buildings.  Roll it forward 30 or so years to 2008 and the roof is coming off!  Downtown Redding is getting a facelift!

The photo here is of the old Dickers’ Department Store which is where you can now go to race karts indoors at Need 2 Speed.  There use to be a roof over the steps here!  What happened?  Check out the blue sky that now appears instead!

What do you think of the current rehab projects?

Please feel free to comment here and get some fun dialogue going…

As always, I am here for your Relocation Needs anywhere around the United States.

Redding, CA to Valdez, Alaska

Places and Faces

Pristine Day in Valdez, AK

What a beautiful place Valdez, AK is!

Because I’m married to a Kiwi and we have spent so much time in New Zealand over the years, I honestly was not sure that Alaska would impress me.  I know, I know.  Sounds like a ridiculous thing to say.  BUT, New Zealand is incredibly gorgeous and you can see so much geological variety in such a small area.  How in the world could Alaska impress?  How wrong I was!

Our sons are salmon fishing for the summer out of Valdez.  So, we flew from Redding, California to Anchorage, Alaska on Horizon/Alaska Air (with a stop in Portland, Oregon to have some lunch and change planes!) on the 8th of August.  We determined it was the best kind of excuse to see Alaska since they were there.

This is the 2nd straight summer the weather has been rainy in Alaska.  Last summer was the worst in 50 years until this year.  Now THIS is the worst summer in 50 (or is it 51 now) years!  We were lucky indeed to have a mostly clear moment to fly into Read the rest of this entry »

Shasta County Wineries and Vineyards

Northstate Lifestyles, Redding Real Estate

Grapes and Vineyards - Shasta County - Photo by Mary Lascelles

One day, a couple months ago, I was driving through a neighborhood on my way from home to town (Palo Cedro to Redding) and saw this very site.   Always traveling with my camera, I stopped to document this morning that so many of us had been looking forward to.  We had seen the ground being prepped for grapes.  Shasta County grapes!  While this will not likely be Napa or Sonoma County ever, you’ll be interested to know that there are a reported 30 wineries and vineyards in Shasta County as I write this in the year 2008.  Who would have thought our landscape would one day include this?

The section had been covered in oaks and scrub and had been meticulously cleared by the owners and the ground was carefully  Read the rest of this entry »

ReloMary Negotiates Thunderhill Park Raceway

Area Attractions, Places and Faces

ReloMary in Mini Cooper at Thunderhill in Willows, CA

I’ve done this twice now - taken our Mini Cooper S to Thunderhill Park Raceway in Willows, CA

The day I’m talking about is a road course day put on by Hooked on Driving hosted by David Ray.  People come from as far away as Southern California, or areas of Northern California like Sonoma County and Sacramento.  I came from the Redding area which is just an hour away.

Nervous?  Yes I was.  My husband, Mark, who races with the Redding Vintage Racing Group - (Dave Hankin, Mark Rincon, Ken Read the rest of this entry »

Rain comes to the Northstate in August!

Northstate Fires

Lassen Peak and Rain

What WAS that sound I heard this morning as I was waking up?  What WAS that smell?  It sounded like raindrops and it smelled like raindrops.  I had almost forgotten how sweet the sound and smell are!

The photo is one I took this morning (8-6-08) from my immediate yard of the plain beyond and the Lassen Range about 40 minutes away to the East.  The view is one that changes daily and here it is getting showered with a spectacular rain today.  I feel incredibly blessed to be living in a spot where the view is changing and spectacular.

There were lightning strikes accompanying this rain - which is what started these fires weeks ago.  You’d better believe we continue to cross our fingers and say our prayers that we don’t start things anew.

So many of you have asked about our fires and how it was all going.  We have had some of the most beautiful days this week Read the rest of this entry »
