Redding’s Sundial Film Festival - Coming March ‘09

Area Events
September 1st, 2008

Happy Kids by Relo Mary (Mary Lascelles) 4-08The idea of a Redding film festival was conceived in my very own household earlier this year…what evolved into the Sundial Film Festival (thanks to work of a very creative committee working on putting together a fantastic project) started out with a name quite different.  I won’t mention any of them as it traveled quite a ways to get to…

be named the Sundial Film Festival

The idea likely came about as we sat around our dinner table with our older son who attended film school in Sydney, Australia.  My husband, Mark, was President of Redding Rotary (ending in June ‘08) and wanted to come up with a project for Rotary that just might endure through the years.

Oh, the wheels of creativity were humming around that table.  You could almost hear the table trembling with excitement!!

Quickly this idea took off.  There are so many talented folks in the Redding, CA area who were interested in turning this idea into reality.  They started gathering on a regular basis at one of Redding’s popular

meeting places - CR Gibbs on Hilltop Drive.  Part of the fun of this was getting the initial group together to come up with a “plan” and a date to launch this.

There is a ton of film/photography talent in our area…a lot of it hidden. The festival will give them a wonderful venue to share it. Kathleen Kennedy, a well known film producer who has worked on well known movies like E.T. and Schindler’s List and The Color Purple (remember, with Oprah!) graduated from our very own Shasta High School.  Kathleen and Steven Speilberg started out together and that they have been successful is an understatement when describing their careers.

With this in mind, it points out that top talent can come from small towns just as it can come from cosmopolitan cities. The idea here is that the Sundial Film Festival will be a venue for talent from the State of Jefferson - Northern California into Southern Oregon. Either the artist needs to hail from the State of Jefferson or the artist must produce the work in the State of Jefferson. See the Sundial Film Festival’s website  for details. The festival will include films of 30 minutes or less as well as still photography.

I am proud to say that Will Lascelles did the marketing video for the festival.  Click his name to see it.   (That’s the famed Forrest Coots skiing in it!)

Hope to see you there March 13-15, 2009 at the Cascade Theater in Redding, CA!  AND, I hope you will comment here about the idea of the festival!  Link to festival’s website:  www.sundialfilmfestival.com

I must add a personal note saying how proud I am to live in this community in Northern California.  We have a wide variety of events here of all kinds (indoor and outdoor) and the list keeps growing.  This is another great one to add which will highlight this place I have lived since 1981.

As always, I am here for your Relocation Needs anywhere around the United States.

    Mary,

    How proud you must be!

I forwarded this to my son to forward to “his people” at his school The Musician’s Institute, (www.mi.edu). Since the school offers a film, music video and t.v. program as well, I thought it might be an opportunity to get the word out to their students.

Break a leg?! In a good way!

good luck ma, we have a festival here each april which draws 7-8 thousand over a weekend for about 15 films. you, of course have a larger population base to draw upon and maybe george clooney or susan sarondon will show up to flog a film.

I agree with the other comments. This is a great idea for an event to showcase local talent and to attract visitors to the area. I’ll have to mark my calendar too. It’s a nice short drive up the road from me.

  16. ReloMary

Hope to see you here, Dave! Driving up I-5 should make it easy, for sure. And well worth the road trip.

  17. Linda Smith

Hi - Livermore, my hometown right at the foot of the Altamont Hills, is home to the California Independent Film Festival and this year I was asked to paint a wine bottle that was given to one of the original organizers. This festival just gets bigger every year.

  18. ReloMary

    Hi Linda,
That is simply “cool”. Can you send me a copy of the painting? I’d love to see it!
    Cheers,
    Mary
